Through Rough Weather Tennis Thrives

By Mandy McGill and Cathy Lang

Despite rainy weather preventing practices and a match or two, the tennis teams are off to a strong start. The varsity team is 2-1-0 after their match against Central on April 21. The junior varsity is 2-0-1 and as of their win on April 21 against Central.

After five matches, the varsity team is showing strong efforts. The five matches the team has played are Westside, Papillion, Central, North, Burke and the Ralston Invitational so far. Four matches have been rained-out already and three have been rescheduled.

"I think our season is going great, but I wish the weather would let us play," said sophomore varsity player Suzanne Stryker. As disappointing as the weather is, the team members still try. The team practices as often as possible indoors at Hanscom, 3220 Ed Creighton Ave, or outdoors at Dewey Park, 530 Turner Blvd.

In the three matches played by the team, they have only lost to Westside. The has beaten Papillion with an impressive six matches to three and Central. The team also earned a fourth place finish at the Ralston Invitational on April 18. "I think that we are doing well with a young team since there are only two seniors," said senior varsity player Meghann Longo.

The junior varsity is also doing quite well. They practice everyday at Willow Wood. Their matches are usually scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday after school. The team is excited to play more matches and hopefully avoid more rain outs.

"The rain outs will effect our schedule because now we have to get all of our matches in. We might end up not being able to play some matches that could help our season," said junior Emily Rasmussen, a junior varsity player.

" I am tickled. We tied against Westside and beat Papillion.I am convinced we've got the potential to win," said junior varsity Coach Carol Gosney.

The J.V. team even practiced at 7:15 a.m. on Sunday April 19 in preparation for the match, their big test, but like many other matches this season, the match was canceled due to rain. The team hopes to get in a great season before May 7, when the j.v. season ends. Both teams have their next matches today against South.
