After five long months of the winter blahs, the spring fever virus attacked Marian students. What, you ask, is the best cure for spring fever? Spring of course! It seems as though the long months of snow and ice are behind us, with only sunshine and heat ahead, but after being cooped up inside all winter, how do Marian girls enjoy the spring weather? Outdoor activities seem to be the top choice among students and teachers. "I went riding on the Keystone trail the other day with a friend. Since I can't drive, I have to use my bike. Every once in a while I get in a weird mood and I go roll in the grass, because it's there, and it's so green and plush," said sophomore Katie Brown.
"I like to go to Memorial Park to play frisbee, or to DeerRidge to go on the Chinese swings. I also go jogging, play soccer, and go shopping for new summer clothes," said junior Julie Reisbig. Many people take advantage of the chance to actually be outside and enjoy the nice weather.
"I ride around in my car with all the windows down, and the music loud," said senior Christy Weller
In the spring, many sports such as track, tennis, soccer, and baseball start their seasons, and summer athletes begin to train and condition. Freshman Ellen Gerweck said that she looks forward to spring, so that she can play soccer. It is a pretty common sight to see people jogging along almost any street or simply walking their dogs for an excuse to be outside. Another common sight of spring is people digging into their gardens, getting them ready to grow in the warm months ahead. If you are lucky, you might just catch a glimpse of Mrs. Kathi Smith or Mr. Tom Baker doing a little gardening of their own. Mrs. Smith said that in the spring she cleans out her flower beds, plants flower seeds and tomatoes, and cleans up after her dog's Twinter debris.
"I have a cottage garden full of flowers, I have lots of flowers. I also have a natural habitat area to attract birds, butterflies, and other wildlife," said Mr. Baker.
Junior Kathleen Conrad likes to spend her spring days doing more simple, relaxing activities. "I have always enjoyed going swinging, jumping on our trampoline, or even just blowing bubbles outside," she said.
While most people see the fun in spring and just relax and enjoy it while it is here, others get straight to business. The term "spring cleaning" may be a common clich , but it still holds relevance. It may not be the most enjoyable thing on anybody's mind, but after a winter of things getting dusty and stale, it is nice to be able to open all of your windows, and air out your house. "In the spring, I completely deep-clean my room. I open my windows and listen to music really loud. I take everything out of my closet, shove everything in the middle of my floor, throw things away, dust, and just go nuts, It's great!" said junior Carolyn Carrington. Mrs. Smith also shares in the spring cleaning ritual. "I clean my garage, that's a ritual of spring," she said.
Whether you choose to spend your spring days working or having fun, get out and enjoy the weather. Before you know it, the fever of spring will be gone and the blistering heat and humidity of summer will take over.
