The two softball teams both wrapped up successful seasons recently. Varsity ended with a record of 27-11, which is new school record. Marian won their Districts for the fifth straight year, beating Lincoln Southeast,3 -2. Marian then went to State whe re they lost in the quarterfinals 3-2 to North Platte.
The success the softball team experienced was not expected in the beginning of the season, according to Coach Mrs. Mary Kassmeier. ÒWe started off 1-5 in the beginning and I thought that it was going to be a long season.Ó Kassmeier said. ÒIt was more s uccessful then I thought it was going to be, they gilled and came together as a team,Ó Kassmeier said.
Although the team did not end its season the way it had hoped, the team did experience some great wins during the regular season. They won in both the Westside and Lincoln Southeast Tournaments. The team also placed second in the Metro Tournament. Par t of the reason for these big tournament wins was the fact that the team worked hard to come together and accomplish their goals. ÒWe struggled in the beginning, grew as a team, and came a long ways to reach our goal to get to state,Ó said Molly Helget, senior.
The JV softball team also ended a successful season. Their record was 6-6-1. The JV team made great strides during the season, according to their coach. ÒThey were very inexperienced in the beginning of the season. They have made great improvements s ince then,Ó said Mrs. Sharon Genoways.
Team members also think that they had a good season, although they still see room for improvement. ÒSometimes we have a lack of concentration,Ó said Michelle Moore, sophomore. Knowing they have things to work on, the softball team plans on an even bett er season next year.
