Sledding: A Fun Way to Beat Winter Blues

By Sarah Lukas

SchoolÕs canceled, itÕs snowing outside, and you are stuck inside with nothing to do. Suddenly, a bright idea pops into your head, why not call up some friends and go sledding?

Sledding is a way to get exercise and have fun all at the same time. All you need is some snow, warm clothes and a sled. "I love to go sledding because it's fun and I get to hang out with my friends," said Angela Aschenbrener, sophomore.

Teachers enjoy sledding, too hought to ourselves wouldnÕt it be fun to go sledding? So, I went into the kitchen and got two round lunch trays. We then went outside and went sledding!Ó

On the other hand, sledding isnÕt for everyone. Laura Geisinger, junior said, "I really don't like to go sledding. I don't have the time and I don't like the cold [weather]."

When it comes to sledding in Omaha, there are many popular places to go. Colleen McGranaghan, senior, likes to go sledding at Mahoney State Park while Aschenbrener likes to take her sled to Memorial Park.

There are many different kinds of sleds

Sledding is fun, but can be dangerous. "When I was in the 3rd grade, I went sledding on our new radio flyer sled, and ran into a fence," said McGranaghan.

It is important that you watch out for trees, fences, and other people sledding to avoid injury. It is also a good idea to dress warmly, so frostbite doesnÕt occur.

All in all, sledding is a great way to beat those winter boredom blues and just have a good time, whether it be by yourself or with some friends. It might even be fun to take your younger siblings or some neighborhood children with you.
