Purses, More than Meets the Eye

Walking down the halls of Marian, it is without doubt there will be an array of purses for one to see. From tiny, palm sized purses to backpack sized ones, a person is sure to see them all. According to a recent Marian survey, 98 percent of the student body carry a purse at least once in a while.

Many people tend not to notice what a purse says about a person's personality. "If I rummaged through a purse that has everything in it's own spot, I would think that that person was organized, but if I looked through a purse that had no organization what-so-ever, I would think that they were a little disorganized," said junior DeEmma McKinley. What the rummager might not see is that the person who owns the purse may be extremely busy and not have time to put their belongings carefully away.

Many people buy purses according to their own personal taste. By doing so, it expresses their personality by the color, style, and contents. "I have a bright orange one that says I am fun and outgoing," said freshman Marisa Gibb. Eighty four percent of Marian students feel as though just one purse is not enough, in fact, 56 percent have five or more purses. Some students, however, feel that a purse is just to keep identification and money. When sophomore Jaime Miller looks for a purse, she looks for something small with a lot of compartments to hold money. "Without a purse, change would get lost at the bottom of my backpack and you just need somewhere to put your change," she said. "I bought my purse because it's small, like a wallet on a string,"

Purses, in a way, can shadow one's personality by its contents as well as appearance. Like Miller, some people carry the bare essentials in their purse which can include money, identification, make-up, and keys. Some people who were surveyed admitted to having things such as love poems from boyfriends, mementos, food, and one person even had an oyster prier in her purse. "Some people carry everything in huge purses," said freshman Emily Salzbrenner.

Whether you have basic tastes in purse purchasing and carry only your essential belongings or if you make extravagant statements with your purse and carry everything possible, purses will always be a fun and easy way to express yourself.
