By Sarah Lawler

MarianÕs Pom Squad and cheerleading squads showcased their spirit at Metros on Nov. 15. The Varsity cheerleading squad was not able to compete due to the State Volleyball Tournament but competed in Regionals on Nov. 22. The J.V. cheerleading squad and Pom Squad received awards for Distinguished in Academic Achievement for earning a combined GPA of 3.25-4.0. The Varsity cheerleading squad received a bid for National Competition and first in their division at Regionals. ÒAll in all, IÕm very proud. Y ou can tell the girls worked really hard,Ó said Mrs. Michelle Delisi, Pom Squad moderator. The cheerleading squads performed a cheer, chant, and dance. ÒI was happy with our performance. We tried our hardest,Ó said freshman Alexis Cardillo, co-captain of the reserve squad. The cheerleaders practiced Mo eek for two months preparing for Metros.

ÒConsidering the amount of time we had to prepare for Metros, I think we did well. I think our squad has become closer since the beginning of the year,Ó said junior Lauren DiSimone, co-captain of the J.V. squad. The squads are continuing to practice fo r the basketball season.

ÒThey compete very well considering the size of our school. IÕm looking forward to having a fun basketball season,Ó said Mrs. Stacie Denning, cheerleading moderator.

The Pom Squad began practicing during the summer to prepare for Metros. They were judged on a two minute dance they performed. ÒI think for the amount of time we put in, we did pretty good,Ó said Nicole Hamlin, senior Pom Squad member.

Many other schools hire choreographers and use study halls for additional practice time,

As of now, Mrs. Delisi said the Marian Pom Squad will no longer participate in Metros. ÒWhen we perform, we do an awesome job. ThatÕs all that matters to me. But, itÕs too stressful for me and the girls. Competition is a good thing if you are competi ng against your own level,Ó said Mrs. Delisi.

All four cheerleading squads and the Pom Squad will continue sharing their spirit at the home basketball games.
