Season Starts With Young Teams

By Emily Morrison and Meghann Longo

Ranked fifth in class A and sixth in the state by the World-Herald, Marian's varsity team started their season against Papillion/ LaVista. In the opening game, Katie Kresl was the leading scorer with eight points. Their record so far is 2-3.

There is one returning starter this year. Even though they are a young team of eight sophomores, the players feel that their speed will help them to adjust to varsity.

Coach Jim Miller, assistant principal, said, "Sometimes the team practices well; sometimes they don't practice well. It's hard to tell how the season will go."

Senior Katie Kresl agrees. "We have a pretty young team, but towards the end of the season, we'll definitely be a contender." Varsity will play in the Holiday Tournament at Benson over Christmas Break.

The JV team coached by Mr. Roger Wright, math teacher, started their season with victories. Their record so far is 1-0. They practice with the Varsity team from 3:30-5:30 everyday after school. Player-----said, Ò You can catch the JV team playing thei r games right before the Varsity.

The reserve team is made up of four sophomores and four freshmen, and coached by Ms. Amy Noel. It is only the third reserve team at Marian. Player Annie Simon said, "We have good expectations for the season. We have a new coach this year who will intr oduce new ideas to the program."

The freshman teams are coached by Ms. Ronda Motykowski, PE teacher. There are seven players on the Freshman A team, five on the Freshman B team, and there are some players that swing. According to Coach Motykowski, the team this year has a lot of speed and good ball handling skill. "It will be easier once we get used to the people on the team and start working together," said freshman Katie Langan.
