Many of us know who Sr. Anna is, but most of us don't know much about her, other than the fact that she works in the office.
Sr. Anna Vitland was born in Detroit, Mich. and attended an all Polish grade school. "It was very different, all of the songs the choir sang were in Polish and Polish was one of the language classes that you could choose to take," said Sr. Anna.
When she was a child, she enjoyed playing most childhood games such as, hide and seek, tag and kick the can. Sr. Anna also enjoyed playing baseball when she was in grade school and basketball while in high school.
Sr. Anna entered the Servants of Mary right after she graduated from high school, and has been a Servite over 40 years. "I became interested in being a Sister when I was in grade school. There were sisters there and I really admired them. I liked the wor k they did and thought that they were all very nice and friendly,Ó she said. ÒI decided to join the Servants of Mary because I liked their spirit. My best friend also joined at the same time I did so it made it a little easier to adjust,Ó said Sr. Anna. As for Marian, she said, "I like it here because there is a nice spirit between the students and faculty. Everyone is concerned about one another."
While committing herself to sisterhood, she also obtained a masters degree in counseling from Siena Heights College in Adrian, Mich.
In her spare time, Sr. Anna enjoys listening to sports on the radio, and watching them on television. ÒIÕm a sports nut, I especially like listening to basketball and football.Ó Some of her favorite teams are: the Chicago Bulls, the Green Bay Packers Nort h Carolina, and Michigan. "I usually like the winning teams," she said with a smile. Sr. Anna also enjoys going to movies. "Some of my favorite movies are, Good Will Hunting and As Good As It Gets." Sr. Anna is also a member of a book club. "I really enjoy reading," she said. Sr. AnnaÕs other favorite pastime is playing the card game pin ochle.
She also enjoys listening to music. "Some of my favorite music artists are, John Tesh, Kenny G, and Yanni," said Sr. Anna.
In the meantime, Sr. Anna spends most of her days here at Marian working in the office. ÒYou really need a lot of patience to work in here,Ó she said. ÒBut working in the office isnÕt all work. Mrs. Kelly and I have a lot of fun. We are co-partners in c rime," said Sr. Anna with another smile.
Working in the office, she often hears some bizarre excuses to get out of school early. ÒOnce a girl had to leave because she had to bury a cat. Another student had an appointment with her banker,Ó said Sr. Anna.
As for the future, Sr. Anna sees herself working in the office until she has to retire. As for now, ÒI am just looking forward to my coffee break and getting something to eat,Ó she said.
