Marian Junior Earns National Recognition

By Karen Zarp

Have you ever wondered who has a say about how the PSATŐs and SATŐs are written and given? One of MarianŐs very own students is now on the advisory panel to help make those decisions.

Ann Young, junior, was chosen along with six other juniors around the United States to serve on the National College Board.

In June of this year, Young was approached by Mrs. Laura Gelecki, Guidance Counselor, who informed her that she had been chosen as the one student from Marian to apply for the position on the College Board. Young had to fill out an application and wri te an essay in order to be eligible to be a member of the Board.

The National College Board is a non-profit organization that promotes the equality of opportunity, a high standard of learning, and financial support, in order to prepare a student for college. This Board creates college planning materials to benefit st udents and educators.

This material is made by students just like Young, which helps this organization with the testing styles and writing skills. ŇThey bounce ideas off of us, we are like Guinea pigs,Ó said Young.

Young will be traveling to different states such as New York and Washington D.C. to converse with other students on the board. ŇIt is a chance for me to voice my opinion on the SAT and PSAT processes,Ó said Young.

Also, Mrs. Kathy Tompkins, Assistant Principal, and Mrs. Gelecki will be traveling to Chicago, along with other administrators of the other students chosen, to attend a convention where the guest speakers are Bryant Gumbel and Hillary Rodham-Clinton.

Young has been honored with the responsibility of something that will affect all the sophomores, juniors, and seniors that in the future will be taking the PSAT and the SAT tests.
