Swimmers Want It Back

by Kim Olechoski

In the past four years Marian swimming has taken an upswing turn. Just this weekend they won the Millard North invite beating out 16 teams and continue to hold the first place spot in Omaha. Helping to keep this pace is junior Katie Eckholt who won the 200 freestyle and broke the previous Marian record. Eckholt currently leads the state in the 50, 100, 200, and 500 freestyle events. Also this weekend freshman Michelle Criss won the 100 breaststroke and broke the previous Marian record.

"With this year starting out the way it is, I can only think that this year will be better than last," said junior swimmer Natalie Kavan.

Other team members agree that their good team rapport plays a big part in leading them to success. "There is a lot more unity this year than compared to the last," said senior swimmer Jen Feyerherm.

Not only is glory being given to team accomplishments, but to individual achievements as well. Several members of the team have already qualified for the state tournament. In fact, Marian has the most qualifying swimmers across the state.

"We have several very fast swimmers, it's like coaching an all star team," said head coach Pat Dibiase. "Katie Eckholt is having an outstanding year. She is an extremely hard worker and very focused."

Even if members haven't received primary qualification, all have at least secondary qualification, which means they will all be making that big trip to Lincoln.

"It helps to have a lot of high caliber athletes. I believe the team did not like placing second in state last year. They have dedicated this season to returning the title to Marian," said Coach Dibiase.

The team shows their desire to bring the title back by this year's team slogan; "We want it back!" Although, the number of fans do not reflect the winning numbers of the swim team fan support was at a definite low for the Millard North Invite with only one student turning out to cheer on the team. "We've become dependant on our own families and team members to keep spirit high because there is really no one else," said Jen Cimino. "I can only wonder how much better we could be with a few screaming fans there to cheer us on."

Senior Danielle Koch feels the same. "I love it when my friends come and watch me swim. I think it would help if they came more often," said Koch.
