We've Got Spirit, Yes We Don't

by Joanna Gerken

How many of us can say that we have been to all or even most of the Marian basketball games? What about the softball games? I'd bet a very select few. Yet how many of us can say that we have been to every state game? I bet a lot more. Sure, the state games have a lot more at stake, but what about all of those other games that are so scarcely attended except for the mascot and her sidekick?

What kind of impression of Marian does that give to other schools when we don't even turn out for regular season games, and then we fill the stands when it comes to taking some time off of school to head down to Lincoln. Granted the state games are the ones with the most riding on them, but most of us don't think about all the time the team has put in to make it to state. I will not say for a second that I have attended all or even most of the different games and events. But I will say that when I see students leaving pep rallies early or sitting there like zombies, I feel disappointed. Not so much because of their inaction, but because of their attitudes which come through so clearly.

We are Marian High School, you and I, and every other student that walks these halls. Even though we may not be the ones suiting up or scoring points, we're still needed. Many athletes say that they can feel the fans' enthusiasm and it affects their performance in a positive way on the court. We share an athlete's ups and downs throughout the seasons. As a senior I have seen many times both the thrill of our school winning it all and the agony of just missing the goal.

I would like to personally commend every person who goes out of their way once in a while to make it to a sporting event, to cheer a little bit louder, and to make it known that she is Marian and couldn't be prouder. I would also like to urge each person who does not make it to the games very often to try. The athletes will appreciate it and soon you may realize how much fun it really can be.
