Unnecessary Illustrations of Spirit
One poster reads, "I love N'Sync!" with cutouts of Justin pasted all over. Another, creatively colored with much effort, reads, "Good luck on your test!" Still another reads, "Sara and Amy's locker: Best Friends Forever!" with a polaroid included. What does this remind you of? Do freshman lockers ring a bell as you make your way through the crowded halls at the east end of second floor? Walking down to the college center during the first weeks of Oct., I couldn't help but notice the rubbish of Backstreet Boys pictures, signs stating positively "Have a Great Day," and balloons lined up in a row. This made me feel even more claustrophobic than usual as I pushed the balloons out of my way and politely forced my way through the already narrow freshman hallway. Don't get me wrong. I'm pleasantly overwhelmed that the freshman class has risen above all the other classes, bringing in unity among their classmates, showing the true Marian spirit, evident not only in the halls but also at all- school assemblies.
Administrators and staff at Marian are very proud of the freshmen, but this went too far. On Oct. 12, freshmen were asked to take signs off their lockers by their homeroom teachers. Some obeyed the rules, while others didn't.
Why not take another outlet to creating friendships that will last a lifetime? Do you really need to tell the whole student body and staff that you are in love with so-and-so, or need to post a public announcement to tell your friend good luck on a biology test? Isn't every student given an e-mail account? Why can't notes be placed inside of lockers? Don't you see your friends in the halls or in classes during the day? Besides, what kind of impression do our visitors get when they wander through the halls? If I was in their shoes, I might wonder how Marian could possibly be a National Blue Ribbon School when it seems like students waste their time making posters for their friends about the latest gossip or which Backstreet boy they are in love with.
Marian provides each student with a quality education, why not put it to use? I'm not saying you can't make posters for your friends with cute little notes. Just do everyone a favor by putting them on the inside of your lockers.
In years to come, when freshmen are seniors they may look back and laugh about the days of freshmen year when they raged about being told to clean up the hallway.
But for right now, keep up the Marian spirit, just keep it a bit more under control.
