Senior Sports Reflection:
Let's Get Reubenized

by Kelley Irvine

Ahhh.... The pleasure of two bowls of Frosted Flakes. Still hungry? Those chocolate donuts from the vending machine call your name. Mmmm...Why stop with a can of pop, go the distance with a bottle. Who needs all that spare change anyway? Blimpies sounds so good.... Hello!?! Omaha was deemed one of the TEN FATTEST cities in the COUNTRY! And judging by the vast array of junk in the vending machine, a lot of girls are getting their daily amount of dairy from Cheez-Its, fruit from Lemonheads, and protein from the peanuts in a Snickers. Not all of us are like this, but a lot of us are. So I sought some advice from Reuben Martinez, a physical trainer and body builder for the past 15 years at Better Bodies Gym, 120th and I. He also hosts a fitness program on Saturday mornings from 7-8 AM on 106.9 FM The City.

So Marian girls, break out those sweatbands and leg warmers and LET'S GET REUBENIZED!

I gave Rueben, who trains 50 people a week, some examples of a "typical" Marian vending machine worshipper and asked him to give us some advice on how to stay fit for the school day.

KELLEY- First question: A lot of times you can see a Marian girl making a 100 yd dash to get the last cheese trio from Blimpies, cutting corners, and weaving in and out of waiting underclassmen. Is there a workout that we can do to give us that extra push to get into the lunch line?

REUBEN-Definitely do some stadiums. Going against gravity up those stairs will build up those muscles that give you an extra quickness when you run to the lunch line.

K- Sometimes a Marian girl will buy a candy bar at the vending machine and it will get stuck and she will have to shake the machine to get it to fall. Is it possible to get the candy and tone our arms at the same time?

R-Depending on the number of girls around you, I would recommend a group exercise. Pick up the vending machine and lay it on the ground with four girls on each side of it. Lift the machine up just like you are doing curls. This way you tone your arms and burn off the calories from the candy bar!

K-The most crowded stairwell at Marian gets pretty rough during passing periods with 705 girls pushing and jockeying for position while going up and down the stairwell to class. Is there a certain movement we should concentrate on to make passing periods more aerobic?

R-Pretend you are a football runningback. Don't go straight up the stairs but cut corners, weaving through girls. If someone gets in your way, push them at angles.

K-At Marian we have a point system and if you get so many points you get a Saturday school. For instance, you get one point for having your shirt untucked. There is one teacher who stalks students and blows a whistle if he sees your shirt out. Many girls will run, duck, slide, and scurry to various dark corners of the school to hide from him. Is there danger of long term damage to the spine or a possibility of back pain in later years from all this running around?

R-Definitely! Especially with those backpacks you girls carry around. You must remember to stand up straight when you wear one of those things! All right Marian, were you listening? Reuben had so much great stuff to say I thought, for the good of fitness, the Marian student body should take this knowledge and spread it to the world. So here is a list of Reubenisms, just in case:

  • Water is the essence of life, you will think better and do better. Why? Because our bodies will be clean. Your urine should be clear.
  • Everyone must do some type of exercise! It keeps people happy. Everyone's angry because no one is teaching. We are all one. We should try to help. Avoid ignorance and selfishness, block anger, exercise!
  • Do different workouts. Variety is the best way to go. Put your body through different things.
  • Exercise is cool! You heal faster; it is incredible. You can do anything!
  • Try a little bit of everything in life. You need to have a strong mind and a strong body not to be hooked up on something.
  • Family is number one. Kids number one. All kids. Even you guys!
