New Spirit Rallies the House

By Lisa Zhan and Kim Luhrs

Cymbals crashed over a chorus of chaotic voices on Oct. 8 as Marian students piled into the new gym for the pep rally.

The golf, softball, cross country and volleyball teams were introduced, but in a format different from last year.

Every player was not called down and asked random questions by the Spirit Club representatives, like last year. Instead of the microphone being passed down the row and having students speak themselves, the coaches introduced their players and had them stand up to be recognized, which got to the point faster than last year. "It's not as long because they don't call everyone down and ask them stupid Bible questions," said senior Maggie Helget. When the coaches introduced their team, they also told the progress of each team. "It gave us the 411 on what's going on so far this year," said freshman Shay Rodgers.

As in past years, the spirit squads performed, but they did it in between athletic teams. "I liked it a lot better (this year) because there were breaks in between each team. It got everybody's spirit up. The dance team and cheerleaders would keep the crowd full of spirit by performing in between sports," said senior Kristina Rankin.

Another new addition to the pep rally was the skit performed by athletes playing a sport other than their own. "I thought it was cute how they had players in different uniforms than they play. It gave everybody a good laugh," said sophomore Jessica Wilmes.

"The skit was fun," said freshman Nicole Steier. "It was a lot different than grade school pep rallies."

"It was fun, but the freshmen need to learn the fight song," said freshman Katie Carlin. "It will be easy to learn, we just haven't heard it that much yet."

Along with performing at MarianUs pep rally, the Dance Team also performed at Creighton Prep's pep rally on Oct. 7. This is the first time in a long time Marian dancers have been asked to participate in something other than the halftime show. "I thought it was so much fun, the guys were totally welcoming and I hope we can do more stuff with them," said junior Ashley Delisi, Dance Team member.

Prep's pep rally was to get everyone excited for the homecoming game on Friday night and the dance on Saturday. "The guys were crazy. I thought they were pretty cool," said sophomore Talisa Partusch These changes added pep to the traditional fall sports pep rally. "The purpose for the change in the spirit rallies was to focus on a theme and to get all areas involved that participate in a district competition. So that includes band, journalism, music, speech, and sports," said Mrs. Michelle Delisi, who helped in organizing the pep rallies along with Ms. Rochelle Rohlfs and Mrs. Beth Colaric.
