Practice Makes Perfect
By Mary StilesSay goodbye to those long hot days lounging by the pool. SchoolUs starting, the weather's changing, and fall sports begin once again. For many Marian students this marks the beginning of some long hard training before the first big game. Getting back in shape can be tough when most of us have spent the past three months bathing in the sun, but some Marian students will see a nice break from the rigorous schedules of their summer athletics.
Club sports can occupy a great deal of time for a serious athlete, according to senior Michaela Wuebben. "It keeps you disciplined. When practice is two hours long, two to three times a week, thereUs no time to get out of shape," Mitchaela said. Michaela plays for the River City Juniors volleyball club during the summer. She has also been a member of Marian's Varsity volleyball team for two years.
Although club sports may demand much of an athlete's time in the summer, the hard work pays off when the season begins.
"Conditioning throughout the summer is hard, but it keeps you busy and in shape," said sophomore Becky Nieman. Becky is a member of the Omaha Toro Soccer Club as well as the Marian Junior Varsity soccer team. She is grateful for the opportunity that club sports have given her to improve her skills year round.
"Playing club sports not only made me a stronger player but it really helped me recover from my surgery." said senior Maggie Helget. After suffering a painful bone spur in her ankle, she took a year off from Marian softball and relied only on club softball to stay fit. Maggie now plays for the Omaha Invaders Softball Club during the summer season. She is also a member of Marian's Varsity softball team for the second year in a row.
As they say "Practice Makes Perfect". You can never run the mile too fast or hit the ball too far. Clearly year round conditioning can do nothing but improve your game.
