Letter to the Editor

I would like to address an issue that came up during our school's involvement in the Duchesne Flag Football game.

In promoting the game and garnering support for our players, an announcement was made about going to the "bowels of the ghetto" to play the game. While I know that this was a way to pump up or team to win the game, I am concerned with the reference of a certain area of town as a "ghetto".

Not only does this offend me because I used to live in that area of town and I have friends and family who still do, I think it's dangerous to use that term, even in fun. To refer to this as the ghetto sends the message that where we live and work and go to school is somehow better because of location.

Omaha is a great city, and while there are places that are generally accepted to be "safer" than others, we need to embrace the whole city and all of its neighborhoods.
