Golfers End Outstanding Season

By Jill Peitzmeier

Not since 1992 has Marian's golf team won the Metro tournament. This was the year they broke that streak, the year they dominated their competition and competed as a team at the State tournament. This was their year.

The season was one of triumph. They finished with a 9-1 record in duals with their only loss being to Fremont by two strokes. The team, consisting of three freshmen, two sophomores, three juniors and two seniors worked hard and accomplished their goals together.

"There were a lot of younger girls on the team this year," said senior Tina Marcuzzo, who played on the JV team. "I tried to be a role model for them, even though I wasn't on varsity."

According to Coach Faye Ford, the JV team players were more than just role models.

"They pushed the varsity kids and gave them competition, but also a lot of support," said Coach Ford.

Support from each other got them through a spectacular season and to the metro tournament. They played well at Elmwood Park that day, and finished first overall.

"As a team, I thought we did really well," said freshman Rachel Istas.

Next came the District competition, held in Lincoln at the Holmes golf course. Here the team also did well overall, placing second.

Finally came the culmination of all their hard work and dedication. The state tournament was held in Grand Island, NE. Grand Island is about a three-hour drive from Omaha, which made it a weekend trip for the five girls who qualified to go. They were juniors Darcey Riha and Maggie Broderick, Istas and freshmen Lindsey Huebert and Brittany Cochran.

Only two of the girls, Riha and Broderick, had been to a state tournament before. This gave them a slight edge over those who had never been before.

"I knew how to handle the pressure better this year," said Riha.

"Maggie and Darcey did so well because they had been there before," affirmed Coach Ford.

The team's experience and dedication led to an overall placing of Sixth, a very strong finish for the Crusaders. Leading the team was Riha who finished Fifth out of 60 competitors. Also in the top 20 were Broderick, 19 and Huebert, 20.

"It was just an outstanding season," said Coach Ford.
