ATTENTION SENIORS AND PARENTS: Senior students who receive a scholarship must bring the original scholarship letter to Mrs. Zimmerman in the College Center. She will make a copy. The scholarship will then be listed in the Graduation Program and published in the Omaha World Herald. No scholarship information will be printed without the original scholarship letter. Deadline for publication is April 23, 2008

We want to assure you that we are taking the time necessary to ensure the highest quality and accuracy of all SAT test scores, and we are doing everything possible to expedite the delivery of scores to students, high schools, colleges, and scholarship programs. It is also important that students send official score reports to colleges to ensure accurate and timely delivery of scores to colleges.

We have also extended some of the regular registration deadlines to be certain that you and your students have the chance to receive scores before the next available registration deadline:

The December registration deadline is now November 7.

The January registration deadline is now December 26.

The May registration deadline is now April 3.

All other registration deadlines are unchanged and remain as previously published. Any late fees sent in during the extended regular registration period will be refunded.

College Planning Bulletin

A monthly college planning guide for Nebraska high school students

Seniors É borrow wisely for college!

The financial aid award letter you received from your college indicates the loans you qualify to borrow. It may include loans you borrow directly from the school (Perkins), from a lender (Stafford Loan), or from the federal government (Direct Loan). In addition, your parents may qualify for the PLUS loan. Your college will provide borrowing procedures.

Before you borrow, estimate your future monthly loan payments using our Student Loan Repayment Calculator at www.educationquest.org/calc.asp .

The key is to borrow WISELY. Think about how debt may affect your future lifestyle. We talked to a former college student named Brad who graduated with a teaching degree, but canÕt afford to be a teacher because heÕs paying off $30,000 in student loans! He offers these tips to help you avoid his mistakes:

á        Carefully research the college you plan to attend to make sure itÕs a good fit. Brad transferred to three different schools, which added additional years of school and loan debt.

á        Estimate your future salary and compare it to the amount of student loans you think you will need.

á        Work while you go to college and use that money to pay living expenses.

á        Use your student loan money only for tuition, books and fees.

á        Keep track of your student loan debt. Brad said he didnÕt pay attention to his debt accumulation until his junior year, and then said, ÒIt was a shock!Ó

Summertime is planning time for juniors

JuniorsÉsummer is the time for serious college planning. Here are your assignments:

á         Start narrowing your college choices. Tour a few schools this summer. Visit EducationQuest and search the Internet for information about colleges that interest you.

á         Update your Activities Resume on the EducationQuest web site. Include extracurricular activities, honors, awards and part-time jobs.

á         Look for scholarships. Free resources include your guidance counselor and ScholarshipQuest at www.educationquest.org, which has over 1,700 local and statewide scholarships. Pay attention to the scholarships seniors are earning so you can apply for the same awards.
