Marian 46, Bellevue West 31
The Reserves picked up a good win today to end the season with a 9-9 record. It was a good team victory - everyone scored in our final game. Despite a slow start, we picked up momentum and had a big second half - outscoring Bellevue West 16 - 7 in the fourth quarter.

Thanks to all of the players for a fun and successful season. You worked hard all season and improved with each game - and I know we'd all like a second chance at some of those losses. I have no doubt that if we replayed some of those games now, the results would be different. Thank you, too, to all the parents. The support you give to your daughters and the rest of the team plays an important role in our success. Thank you for all the encouragement throughout the season!

Marian 30, Millard West 45
Tough loss today against Millard West. We had a difficult time breaking Millard West's press and didn't do a good job of taking care of the basketball. Too many turnovers!

Marian 53, Lincoln North Star 42
Wow!!! What a big win over a tough Lincoln North Star team! The girls played their best basketball of the season and never let down throughout the entire game. We started with a strong first quarter - scoring 19 points in the first 8 minutes - and never let up after that. The girls did an excellent job of controlling tempo - pushing the ball most of the game but used the clock well in the 4th quarter. The girls played up to their full potential this game - and we'll need to keep playing hard for our last two games. They'll be tough games - but if we play like we did tonight, we could end with two more wins!

2/9/09
Marian 29, Elkhorn 35
Even though it was a loss, the girls played a good game against Elkhorn tonight. Elkhorn's team consisted of a lot of JV and Varsity players - but our Reserves stuck with them every step of the way! We had the lead at half but went cold in the second half - missing too many easy shots. I thought the girls did a great job on defense. Our pressure had Elkhorn rattled quite a few times. It was a valiant effort against a tough Elkhorn team!

2/3/09
Marian 55, Central 28
Nice game tonight against the Central Eagles. Molly and Megan both did an excellent job of pressuring Central's point guard (a very talented player!). Although we struggled offensively in the first half, we did a much better job of controlling tempo in the second half. We pushed the ball when we could but were patient on offense when necessary, too. We had good ball movement and worked the inside/outside game - especially in the second half. Congrats to Morgan - she had a double double tonight (11 points, 10 rebounds)!

A new Marian Reserve record...
In our last game, Teresa Gasnick set a new Marian Reserve record for most career rebounds at the reserve level! She broke Megan Thurston's record from last year. (Megan now plays varsity basketball at Omaha Bryan.) Way to go, Teresa!

Marian 26, Lincoln Southeast 33
Wow! 8 games in 9 days - and finally we get to catch our breath a little...
Tonight we gave the undefeated Knights a real battle! Despite only scoring 2 points in the second quarter, the team played hard in the second half and almost gave Southeast their first loss. Even though we didn't get the victory, we gave Southeast their closest game of the season and held them to only 33 points (they had been averaging 46).

It's amazing how much this team has improved in the last nine days - if we had played Southeast two weeks ago, we would've been crushed. Now, the girls are playing with confidence and are coming together as a team! I think tonight proved that we can compete with anybody!

1/27/09
Marian 56, Westside 20
The winning streak continues with four wins in a row! Good game by everyone!

1/26/09
Marian 38, Bellevue West 12
We're on a roll - winning our third game in a row over Bellevue West. The girls started the game with a strong first quarter - scoring 13 points in the first 8:00. Once again, though, our defense really helped us win the game. We held Bellevue West to only 12 points and had difficulties breaking our press.

1/24/09
Marian 41, Omaha Gross 15
Great defensive victory to get 5th in the Duchesne tournament! Molly, Clare, and Megan followed the game plan perfectly - they played awesome defense and frustrated Gross' point guard. Great win by the entire team - everyone contributed to the victory. The team played much better in both games today - big improvement from a week ago!

1/24/09
Marian 45, Ralston 27
We FINALLY played four great quarters of basketball - and picked up a win over Ralston. Everyone played a great game!

1/23/09
Marian 43, Skutt 44
Yet another one point loss - this time in the first round of the Duchesne 9/10 tournament. The girls played a phenomenal fourth quarter in the game tonight - scoring 22 points in one quarter! Unfortunately, we dug ourselves in a hole in the second and third quarters - trailing by 12 points at the end of three. I was very proud of the efforts tonight against Skutt. Even though it was another loss, we saw of glimpse of how good we can be. We play tomorrow for 5th place....it's our time for a win!!!

1/21/09
Marian 28, Lincoln Southwest 29
We had a much stronger start to the game tonight - actually finishing the first quarter with a three point lead - but went into halftime trailing by one. We had our chances to win the game but couldn't get our shots to fall. Overall, though, the girls played a lot better tonight!

1/20/09
Marian 37, Bellevue East 46
Today we began a long stretch of games - 8 games in the next 9 days! Like our last game, we started slow - getting down 8 - 0 in the first few minutes of the game and scoring only 4 points in the first quarter. We had a hard time adjusting to Bellevue East's defense and couldn't get our shots to fall. But, we picked up the intensity and won the second half by 4 points - once again trying to rally back but falling short in the end. Our goal for future games is to come out strong right from the start - fourth quarter intensity in the first quarter.

1/14/09
Marian 52, Omaha North 63
We opened 2009 with a tough game against Omaha North. North jumped out to a ten point lead early in the game due to their offensive quickness and defensive pressure. We got rattled and didn't do a great job of protecting the ball. Offensively, we didn't run our offense and just couldn't put the ball in the hole. At one point in the third quarter, we were down by 25 points. However, the girls fought back in the fourth quarter and got back within ten. Unfortunately, our efforts fell short.

We have a really tough week next week - traveling to Bellevue East and Lincoln Southwest and then competing in the Duchesne 9th/10th Tournament. It'll be a busy week - full of quality opponents!

12/22/08
Marian 45, Burke 35
Great team victory over a talented Burke team (consisting of three JV starters)! Everyone played well - but I was especially proud of our guards. Jane and Emily did a great job of handling the ball, limiting our turnovers and handling Burke's press. Molly, Megan, and Clare did a great job shutting down Burke's point guard - taking them out of their offense. Kudos to Clare who scored 15 points in the second half! Awesome win, girls!

We head into Christmas break with a 2-2 record. We have a long break until our next game, which isn't until the middle of January! Thanks to everyone for coming to our games - I wish you all a very Merry Christmas!

12/20/08
Marian 30, Millard North 54
Tough 9:30 a.m. loss after the sophomore's first formal dance on Friday night. I think we might have spent too much energy dancing the night away - the team only shot 17% from 2-pt range for the game!

12/11/08
Marian 69, Westside 24
The reserve team picked up their first win tonight against Westside - winning by 45 points. The first quarter was sluggish - and sloppy - but we eventually picked up the pace and controlled the game. It was a great team victory - everyone scored and contributed to the game. Kudos to Laura for having 7 assists and to Teresa for grabbing 10 rebounds! We went from having 2 good quarters against Skutt to having 3 good quarters against Westside. Our next game is against Millard North - and I think we'll need 4 good quarters in order to come away with a victory!

12/8/08
Marian 34, Skutt 44
The reserve team lost their first game by 10 against an aggressive Skutt team. We started off slow and went into halftime with a 16-point deficit. After making some adjustments at half, we rallied back to within six but fell short in the end. I was proud of how hard the girls played and that they never gave up - but there's still a lot we need to work on. Our next game is at home on Thursday versus Westside.
